RINGED TEAL (Callonetta leucophrys)

The Ringed Teal is a small dabbling duck (sometimes referred to as a Perching duck) from South America.

The Ringed Teal has strong pointed claws on their feet allowing them to perch in trees.

Conservation Status


Size
350mm to 380mm (14" to 15")

Appearance - Male
The male has a Whitish head, a Blue/Grey bill with a Black tip, a Chestnut back, pale Grey flanks and a Salmon coloured breast with Black speckles. A Black band runs from the top of its head down the back of its neck. The rump is White, the tail Black and the legs and feet are Pink. They also have a distinctive White patch on the wings.

Appearance - Female
The female has an Olive Brown back with a light coloured head with Brown blotching, a pale chest and belly. Other features are similar to the male.

Habitat
Swampy Forests, Marshes, Wooded Lowlands, Pools and small Streams.

Diet
Aquatic Plants, Insects and Seeds.

Breeding Time
March to September

Nest
The nest is built in tree hollows lined with down.

Eggs
Quantity: 4 to 10
Colour: Whitish.
